Team Glacier NewsTeam Glacier Wins 2003 State Championship In its second season since inception, Team Glacier won the 2002-2003 AHAI Women's "A" State Championship Sunday afternoon on home ice at Glacier Ice Arena. Team Glacier took an early lead and held on to defeat the third-seeded
Illinois Storm 2-1. Team Glacier advances to face the Milwaukee Pond Piranhas and the St. Louis Force in the Central Region tournament March 21 - 23. The teams will compete for a berth in the National Championship tournament.
Trailing 3-1 with seven minutes remaining, Team Glacier scored two clutch third period goals and the OT game-winner to defeat Fox Valley 4-3 Sunday morning. With the win, the Glacier women move on to the championship game against the Illinois Storm Sunday afternoon. Glacier fell behind midway through the first period when Fox Valley's Michelle Nardi scored the first of her three goals for the game. The Glacier women rebounded in the second period, scoring an early point and killing two minor penalties. The top line connected when Brenda Culver recorded her first tally of the weekend, assisted by Andrea Johnson and Jet Hall. Fox Valley broke the 1-1 tie with two minutes to play before the second intermission on Michelle Nardi's second goal of the match. The period ended with Fox Valley up by one and Team Glacier leading the shots on goal 21-6. To start the third period scoring, Nardi picked up a hat trick when she fired a wrister just over the blocker of Rita Nanni at 9:15. Trailing by two late in the third, things didn't look good when Team Glacier was unable to convert on a Fox Valley penalty with ten minutes remaining. But the girls drew within one of the Falcons when Andrea Johnson carried the puck into the offensive zone and beat Mandi Ferleyko on a low backhander. Calling a time-out with 16 seconds remaining, Team Glacier resumed play with an empty net and an extra skater. Glacier put the puck on goal from a face-off in the Fox Valley end, and in a scramble in front of the net, Cami Schoop buried the tying mark sending the game into extra time. Both teams played tough offensive hockey through the bonus session in which Team Glacier outshot Fox Valley 6-5. With just 8 seconds on the clock, Center Brenda Culver initiated what would be the final play of the game deep in the Glacier zone. Culver passed the puck up ice just within reach of Andrea Johnson, who tipped it wide and over the center line. With 11 seconds on the clock, Jet Hall corralled the puck while crossing the blue line and deked to the inside of the Fox Valley defender, sending a quick shot just between the inside post and the sprawled pad of Ferleyko for the game-winner. Team Glacier advances to the State Championship match where they will look to avenge their second round loss to the Illinois Storm.
One goal was all it took for the Illinois Storm to beat Team Glacier Saturday morning. In the teams' fifth meeting this season, Kate McAdams scored the winning goal on an assist from Jamie Roelke at 10:09 of the second period. Team Glacier never settled into its game plan, rushing the play and giving the Storm six power play opportunities. Goalie Rita Nanni stood on her head, turning away 26 shots, but the defensive breakdown that allowed the first goal proved fatal. Team Glacier enters the losers' bracket where they will face the Fox Valley Falcons in an elimination game Sunday at 10:20 am. Glacier went 3-1-0 against Fox Valley during the regular season, but was upset by the Falcons in the WCHL playoff last weekend.
Team Glacier eked out an overtime win against the U of I "B" squad in Round I of the AHAI State Tournament Friday night. Marcie Lavoie opened the scoring, recording her fourth goal of the season at 11:25 of the first period. Illini stand-out Garnet Litherland tied it up with an unassisted mark midway through the second, sending the teams deadlocked into the second intermission. The third period saw physical play resulting in five penalties and a power play goal. Glacier's penalty kill unit survived an early tripping call against Mollie McQuillan, but could not stop the Illini offense when Jen Robinson sat down for interference at 6:50. A U of I power play goal sent the first game of the tournament into extra time. Both teams played strong defensive hockey, recording zero total shots in the first seven minutes of overtime, before Cami Schoop slipped the sudden-death game winner through the five-hole on Kate Pripusich-Sienklewicz.
