Team Glacier Rallies at Windsor Molson Tournament
October 28, 2002

Team Glacier traveled to Windsor, Canada October 25-27 for the 10th annual Molson Ladies Hockey Classic to face-off against several of Michigan’s powerhouse teams. Having heard that two teams in their pool, the Remax Stars and O’Leary Hawks, had handily out-muscled some very skilled teams from the central district, Team Glacier went into battle with nothing to lose, and perhaps a bit of trepidation.

Game 1: Re-Max Stars
The first period ended in a scoreless tie, as Team Glacier countered the speedy and highly skilled ReMax team with outstanding defensive play. The second period saw continued firepower from ReMax, who capitalized with a power play goal. Team Glacier came out of the gate feisty in the third, led by Brenda Culver who picked off a Remax pass and scored on a beautiful wrist shot, beating the Remax goalie on the blocker side. With the game tied 1-1, ReMax responded by turning up the heat, scoring two more goals before the end of the period, including one on a breakaway. Team Glacier goalie Sue O'Connor was outstanding in net making 29 saves in a game that was much closer than had originally been anticipated.

Game 2: O'Leary Hawks
Pumped-up by their play in the first game, Team Glacier faced-off 3 hours later against former National Champions, the Michigan O’Leary Hawks. The first two periods saw much of the same from Team Glacier: strong defensive play. However, against O’Leary, the TG offense turned up the pressure and created many scoring chances. Kathy Cronkhite put Glacier on the board with a beautiful top-shelf goal on an Andrea Johnson assist in the second. In the third, O’Leary led Team Glacier 2-1 and play was end to end. A controversial call by the ref, who signaled a second goal for Cronkhite and then changed his mind, denied Team Glacier the tying mark. Eyewitnesses Cronkhite and Johnson wished there were video replay to reveal the truth, but alas, women’s hockey doesn’t have that kind of technology. Instead, the Hawks added one more tally and the game ended in a 3-1 final. Again, Team Glacier goalie Sue O’Connor stood on her head (despite a migraine), stopping 32 of 35 shots by one of the best teams in the country.

Game 3: Bulldogs
Is it a relief to play another MSHL "Advanced A" team after facing two of the supposed best teams in the state? Not really. The Mount Clemens Bulldogs were another formidable opponent. This was a tight back and forth contest with neither team willing to budge for 2 periods. Midway through the third, Monette McKinney made a tape-to-tape breakout pass to Marcie Lavoie, who quickly fed a lead pass to a full speed Andrea Johnson. Johnson skated in on the Bulldog goalie and threaded the needle from a tough angle to tally her first goal of the weekend (good timing). Goalie Sue O'Connor skillfully thwarted every scoring attempt by the Bulldogs, earning a well-deserved shutout. The 1-0 victory capped a great weekend of hockey for Team Glacier.

On a side note: Winning the "good karma" award for the weekend was forward Cami “Lucky” Schoop who won $5000 on dollar slots at the Windsor Casino. Legend has it that she won the money on the first dollar that she put in the machine and that she'd never set foot in a casino before that day. Legend also has it that she generously decided to split her winnings with all of her teammates. We're still waiting Cami!
