Team Glacier Skates into Playoffs at 2006 National Championship
March 25, 2006

Dateline Buffalo 3/24/06

Having defeated the St. Louis Red Raiders for the Regional Championship two weeks before, Team Glacier began its run at the Women’s C Level National Championship on Friday morning the 24th. National Championships begin with 12 teams from all regions of the country divided into two conferences. Each conference is then further divided into two divisions of three each. The tournament begins with a round robin of each team in one division of a conference playing each team in the other division of that same conference. At the end of the three round robin games, the top four teams from each conference then advance to quarterfinals against teams in the other conference. From that point on, all games are single elimination. Only the winning team advances to a next game.

For its first game, Team Glacier faced off against the Nighthawks from Massachusetts. While the Nighthawks scored first, it was clear that Glacier dominated the play, and it was only a matter of time before the scoreboard showed it. Four minutes after the Nighthawks first goal, Glacier evened up the score on a goal by Marie Calahan. A minute later, Kristi Anderson put in another one. And with six minutes left in the first period, Pat Lee scored a third. The second period saw a bevy of scoring with Glacier putting in four more goals and the Nighthawks finally scoring two more to bring the score to 7-3.

Throughout the game Glacier clearly dominated the Nighthawks whose entire offense was led by #11 Rondeau. The Nighthawks also attempted to take advantage by leaving a cherry picker in the neutral zone during the first and second period at all times. During the second period this strategy bore fruit as once again Rondeau was able to take advantage of a puck that bounced out of the zone after a Glacier defensemen shot it into the legs of a Nighthawks forward. Though a Glacier defenseman was there at the neutral zone, Rondeau with superior stick handling was able to get around her and then put it in the net through the five hole

In the third period, Glacier completely controlled the game keeping the puck in the Nighthawks zone most of the period and taking care of business defensively when it was in the Glacier zone. The game ended with Glacier up 7-3. Shots on goal were 46 for Glacier and 21 for the Nighthawks. Notable was the fact that all seven Glacier goals were scored by different individuals. Virtually everyone on the team is a scoring threat which makes trying to isolate only the top players as a defensive strategy a poor play.

In its second game of the day, Glacier played the Concord Flames. Again as in the first game, Glacier dominated play keeping the puck in the Concord zone an overwhelming amount of time. Nevertheless, Glacier had a tough time scoring and finally put the first goal of the game in with the first period halfway gone. In the second period, Glacier killed off two penalties and neither team scored. The third period saw both teams finally scoring. Glacier was successful early in the period with 2 goals scored by Kristi Anderson 20 seconds apart less than two minutes into the period. Concord put another point up less than a minute after that bringing the score to 3-2. With two minutes left in the game, Glacier was called for high sticking and went a man down. In a scramble by the net the Flames were able to score a power play goal bringing the game to a 3-3 tie with one minute left. Despite putting on a ending flurry, Glacier was unable to put another goal in and had to settle for the tie. Glacier outshot Concord 43 to 14.

Glacier’s third game was not til early Saturday afternoon when it faced the Columbus Capitals. Glacier took control of this game from the start and never relinquished it. This game saw the most penalties of any contest yet with Columbus getting six minors and Glacier tallying five. Scoring was distributed throughout all three periods with Glacier getting two in the first, one in the second and a fourth in the third period. Glacier again out shot its opponent by a wide margin of 29-9 on its way to a commanding 4-0 victory. This victory not only ensured Glacier’s advancement to the quarterfinals, but with Concord only tying for its third game, it made Glacier the number one seed for its conference.

Saturday night, Glacier faced the Phoenix Scorpions for the quarterfinals. Unlike the earlier games, this game was played on an Olympic size surface which is fifteen feet wider than the standard surface. It may not sound like much, but it means a lot more skating and further it changes the angles for everything, shots, passes, breakouts, dump-ins, etc. Even more, the wider surface makes it harder for defensemen to become part of the play in the offensive zone as there is so much more area to cover. From the beginning of this game, it was clear that it would be very tight. The first period saw a lot of back and forth play but it was not until there were two minutes left in the period that Cami (Caminem) finally scored for Glacier. In the second, again the game went back and forth. Phoenix with only ten skaters versus Glacier’s thirteen looked like it was beginning to tire occasionally dogging it. Nevertheless, with 4.32 left in the second Phoenix was able to even up the game when they were able to pick up a puck in their own zone during a scramble and send it up to their best player who was cherry picking. At the end of the second period with the score at 1-1, both teams headed off to their locker rooms while the ice was resurfaced. The fifteen minute rest was a boon to Phoenix who came out for the third as energetic as they had been in the first. But, again the game was very even and no scoring took place until there were four minutes left in the game and Phoenix scored a go ahead goal. With two minutes left in the game, Glacier pulled its goalie and put on a sixth skater. Controlling the puck and throwing a flurry of shots on net, Glacier thought it evened up the game with 36 seconds left. However, officials said it was not a goal and the teams lined up again for a face-off in the Phoenix zone. Again, Glacier controlled the puck off the face-off but was unable to put the puck in net. The game ended with Phoenix winning 2-1 and advancing to the semi-finals.
